Ernesto Sanchez—known by most on the streets as Spider, for his daring in committing burglaries in second and third story buildings—sat on the floor of his furnitureless little Hollywood bungalow readying himself to take a hit. He was loading up the crack pipe with a sizable piece of rock cocaine, sweating and dizzy almost beyond function in his anticipation.

There was a time when he used to do his burglaries for the fun and the glory of it—and of course for the money—but that was in his youth. Now, at age twenty-five, he felt like a hopeless old man who couldn’t remember how the bitch called crack had been introduced to him or at what point she’d taken over his life.

He finally had the thin two-inch long glass stem, known on the streets as a straight shooter, packed to his satisfaction. He grabbed the lighter from the floor beside him with trembling fingers. As he lit the flame he stared briefly at the white lump perched like a watching hawk at the end of the pipe, thinking he should put it down and give this up—if not for himself, for his three children by his ex-old lady.

His ex, that bitch—she loved to trumpet to the kids how their father was a bum who could not leave the streets or the dope alone. That was the painful thought that made him drop the flame onto the waiting piece of rock.

He inhaled deeply, his ears dimly registering the sizzle and pop of the disintegrating rock piece. His mind seemed to let go instantly of all that was plaguing him; indeed, it seemed almost as if his soul had fled his body for a second, racing on to some better, peaceful place where nothing else mattered. He blew a thick cloud of pure ivory smoke out and felt suddenly invigorated and ready for anything, the euphoric centers of his brain stimulated twenty times beyond their normal capacity. A wide, wolf-like grin stretched across his face and he thought of the day’s earlier activities with a smile.

He had done a burglary that had been so easy that it was basically no fun. It was a second story lawyer’s office. His new partners in crime, Fereal McNaughton and Orlando Flores, two LAPD officers, had come to him with the job. They had approached him in jail over a year and a half ago and offered him a unique deal: they would case out buildings for him and he would go in and get the merchandise for them (which was not always salable goods; sometimes it was paperwork or personal photos of people in compromising positions, things of that nature), after which they would pay him in cash. He didn’t know or care what they did with the stuff afterward. It was nice that for once he didn’t have to bother messing with a fence; he just got his money upfront and could immediately go score his drugs.

That was most certainly the case today. He’d done a couple of lawyer’s offices for his cop homies before, but usually it was always for paperwork.
